I Polvo tornano al lungo formato con Exploded Drawing (Touch&Go, 1996) - che segna anche il passaggio a una etichetta di grande prestigio come la Touch&Go, alla regia ancora Weston - e trovano il punto di equilibrio fra i suoni fratturati e scomposti dei dischi precedenti e la melodia, anche grazie ad armonie vocali più a fuoco. Esemplare è proprio la traccia inziale, che subito scopre le carte in tavola: "Fast Canoe" è una melodia a intermittenza disegnata con cura dalle chitarre, un continuo fermarsi e ripartire, un moto ondulatorio costante e ipnotico. Subito la successiva "Bridesmaid Blues" rilancia la sfida e dopo una partenza travolgente si scioglie in una coda acida e allucinogena. E ancora la carica rock di "Feather Or Forgiveness" e "Crumbling Down", il finto pop trasfigurato di "The Purple Bear" e "Taste of Your Mind"; i riff di chitarra impazziti e inconfondibili in pezzi come "In This Life" e "Snowstorm In Iowa". Ma è tutto l'album che accresce il loro discorso, un collage originalissimo fatto di lame affilate che tagliano in due ogni materia sonora convenzionale. Tutti i brani vivono su invenzioni geniali e imprevedibili, e la chiusura affidata alla lunga (dodici minuti) "When Will You Die For The Last Time In My Dreams" è il compendio e allo stesso tempo il superamento di tutto ciò che i Polvo hanno saputo creare lungo tutta la loro carriera. La melodia stracciata della voce sofferente di Ash Bowie che urla cercando di vincere il tintinnare metallico, le ripartenze folli seguite da delicati ricami delle chitarre, fino alla sterminata divagazione strumentale finale che amplia le sfumature noise-psichedeliche del loro suono iperstrutturato.
