This week the obstetrician-turned-consumer-champion runs her eye over an area she should be right at home with:

medicine. Which of the remedies in our home medicine cabinets, she wonders, are worth having and which are a waste of

shelf space? She begins with homeopathy, the fastest-growing form of complementary medicine, whose claims are swallowed

by nine million people in the UK. Prof Regan looks at the evidence and does an experiment of her own with a group of

insomniacs to test if the appeal of homeopathic medicines might be put down to the placebo effect. She also runs the

rule over herbal remedies, branded painkillers and off-the-shelf treatments for the common cold. DVDs weren't available

for viewing, but Regan's brand of sceptical rigour usually offers a dose of good sense.
