China in the 1920's. After her father's death, nineteen year old Songlian is forced to marry Chen Zuoqian, the lord of a powerful family. Fifty year old Chen has already three wives, each of them living in separate houses within the great castle. The competition between the wives is tough, as their master's attention carries power, status and privilege. Each night Chen must decide with which wife to spend the night and a red lantern is lit in front of the house of his choice. And each wife schemes and plots to make sure it's hers. However, things get out of hand...

just put the file with the subtitles in the desired language in the same folder with the video file. then play the video file. it should work.

But what does that mean? I have the video and I have the .srt file with the subtitles. I put the video in the AVS converter or ConvertXtoDVD and then try to put the .srt file with the subtitles in it and it won't recognize the .srt file. So how do I put the English subtitles in a "folder" with the video? I don't understand how to convert this ... Very unfriendly to a user.

To be honest, I don't know what AVS converter and ConvertXtoDVD are. Try downloading VLC player, that is what I use. It plays basically every video format, it's simple to use and you can load the subtitles manually if it fails somehow to load them automatically, which it never has (if they are in the same folder in the computer as the video file), at least during the time I've used it. In my experience, most of the movies and subtitles in torrents are exactly like these ones, so this should also save you any future problems. Hope it helps.

In VLC player, you even don't need to put the subtitle file in the same location of the video file. You can choose the filepath of the subtitle file by going through the Video menu -> Subtitles track -> Open and selecting the desired language subtitle. It works for me whenever I download subtitles from podnapisi.net

picture is great. sound seemed a little weak, though. soft subtitles in english, spanish, french, itanlian, portuguese, swedish, turkish and simplified chinese. great job, thanks for sharing.
