EP Review: Rhodes – Raise Your Love - Hannah Daisy

Hailing from Hitchin, 24-year-old troubadour David Rhodes is creating quite the buzz of late with his subtle sense of anonymity and heartfelt, honeyed vocals likened to Jeff Buckley.

Picking up a guitar in just January this year, Rhodes discovered a remarkable talent, refreshingly showcased over his debut EP, Raise Your Love.
Released this week via Hometown Records, Rhodes’ four track offering is a hauntingly beautiful reflection of simplicity at its best, achieved through a somewhat less is more approach – recorded with Charlie Fink and James Kenosha.

Deftly plucked opener ‘Run’ with its evocative lyricism and hushed percussion is a stunning introduction to Rhodes. Textured, ghostly vocals allow the song to build to a sublime crescendo, before his devastatingly beautiful vocals fade into the distance.

‘Worry’ follows, with his trademark delicate croons draped over shimmering electric guitar, once more making use of soaring crescendos before the intriguing atmospheric outro.

The achingly sombre ‘Darker Side’ is a stripped down, intimate affair. Sliding guitar and echoed reverb allow for a stark, raw simplicity of the finest form before final track, ‘Raise Your Love’.

Impossible to ignore, the aforementioned ethereal closer and title track encapsulates the sheer promise and talent showcased throughout the EP. Dabbles of restrained percussion once more feature alongside clanging electric guitar and his trademark towering vocals.

‘Raise Your Love’ is a delectable arrangement ensuring all eyes and ears are firmly set on Rhodes’ next steps. Sit in front of the fire and spin this on vinyl; you sure won’t forget this simply majestic winter warmer in a hurry.
