Richard Coeur de Lion, Troubadours and Trouveres in the late 12th Century - Alla Francesca (1992) [Philidor; FLAC] (Size: 263.15 MB)
DescriptionThe earliest troubadours (South France) and trouveres (North France) may have brought their art back with them from the Crusades, where they encountered the performances of MidEastern poets singing their works. These first European singer-poets in the late 12th century were almost exclusively nobility, though their craft would eventually spread into lower social circles. Richard the Lionhearted himself was a trouvere. (It's usually forgotten that at that time the rulers of England regarded themselves as French; and French was the language of their court, as well.) One of his surviving works is included on this album, along with an excellent selection of 13 others from the same period.
