Dennis Brain (1921-1957) is commonly considered the greatest French horn player of his day, and remains something of a legend. Even the most excruciatingly difficult works for his instrument--and this concerto ranks among them--were tossed off with great ease, without in any way fudging the fingerings or tone. He even made an appearance once at once of the satirical Hoffnung Concerts, performing a movement of one of the Mozart horn concerti on a section of garden hose--and managed to make it sound good, too.

This is considered one of the finest performances of Strauss' late second horn concerto. No apologies needed for the sound, or the performances.
