Description
Robert Thurman - 2009 - A Shrine for Tibet - The Alice S. Kandell Collection (319p).pdf Hardcover: 336 pages Publisher: Overlook Hardcover (February 4, 2010) Language: English ISBN-10: 1590203100 ISBN-13: 978-1590203101 I came across this art book in my local independent bookstore and was "blown away." It is a secret collection made by a New Yorker in her Manhattan apartment and put together as a shrine. These are 13th to 19th century Buddhist masterpieces - most in bronze sculpture - that were smuggled out of Tibet and then had to be sold by the noble families for survival - but only on the condition that the relics retain their religious use. Ms. Kandell honored that wish. After decades, she let her unique, private collection be viewed - but only as a shrine - as it was intended to be experienced. These are pristine art sculptures of the many deities in Buddhist practice. I cannot think of any serious student of Buddhism who would not be "moved spiritually" by the devotion of Ms. Kandell to house and strictly maintain the collection of magnificent pieces as a shrine. Art can touch the soul. This art book is among the few volumes that can do...just that. Sharing Widget |
