I did Rosetta Stone for some time and I don't think it really is a good method for total beginners like I was some time ago. Japanese grammar is something you need to be aware from the beginning and RS's method of catching on things out of the air isn't really great if you have no previous idea of how Japanese works. Pimsleur, on the other hand, is a good method for total beginners although it is preeeeeety slow.

I went back to Rosetta Stone after finishing Pimsleur, Human Japanese and the first 50 lessons from the Beginners level in JapanesePod 101. I started directly from level 2 and things got a way more interesting.
