Koussevitzky was lucky in getting much of his considerable wealth out of Russia before the Revolution. With it he not only lived comfortably, but was able to commission a number of works that are a testament to his taste (among the better known, Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, and Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra). Roy Harris was an American composer he held great respect for, and commissioned from repeatedly. His Third Symphony became among his most popular works.
