Description
Afternoon Play: 1/2 Rumpole and the Penge Bungalow Murders 20-05-2009
Adaptation by Richard Stoneman of the novel by John Mortimer. It is the 1950s, a short decade after the end of the war, and two war heroes have been shot dead. The only suspect is Simon Jerrold, the son of one of the victims, and he faces the death penalty. Defending him is deemed hopeless, so the case is handed to a novice. But the novice's superiors did not count on the tenacity and wit of the young and hungry Horace Rumpole. From The Radio Times "Life is a game of chance" observes Rumpole as he ruminates on the events that led to his "finest hour in court" and introduced him to his wife Hilda -She Who Must Be Obeyed. For devotees of the curmudgeonly barrister, this is a case from Rumpole's early years and has him crossing swords with his head of chambers-and future father-in-law as it turns out -as he defends the suspected murderer of two Second World War pilots. Press, public and contemporaries are convinced of the man's guilt, but not Rumpole, and he risks his career to prove it. Benedict Cumberbatch gets to play the young, thrusting and perhaps more dashing Rumpole, while Timothy West is the growly voice of the older man admiring the insights of his younger self. -- Jacqueline Wheeler Elder Horace Rumpole ..........................
