Description

Happy 65th birthday Carlos Santana !!

Carlos Augusto Alves Santana (born July 20, 1947) is a Mexican and American musician who became famous in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band, Santana, which pioneered a fusion of rock and Latin American music. The band's sound featured his melodic, blues-based guitar lines set against Latin and African rhythms featuring percussion instruments such as timbales and congas not generally heard in rock music. Santana continued to work in these forms over the following decades.

Santana first came to public attention after their performance at the Woodstock Festival in 1969, when their Latin rock provided a contrast to other acts on the bill. In 1998, the group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, with Carlos Santana, Jose Chepito Areas, David Brown, Mike Carabello, Gregg Rolie and Michael Shrieve being honored. Santana (the band) has achieved a total of eight Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards which were all awarded in 2000. Carlos also won two Grammy Awards as a solo artist in 1989 and 2003. He experienced a resurgence of popularity and critical acclaim in the late 1990s. In 2003 Rolling Stone magazine listed Santana at number 20 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

Santana (Legacy Edition)

The original debut album of Santana was recorded from May until August 1969 and released shortly after the Woodstock festival had happened. The self titled debut album, Santana, established the band as one of the most exciting and innovative acts to emerge from the San Francisco scene of the 60s. Santana founded a new style, something very danceable, heavily Latin-Rock influenced yet it just echoed the sounds of the streets. The Legacy Edition includes the original remastered album (tracks 1 - 9 on the first disc), additional alternative takes, unreleased songs, studio jams and - most important - nearly the complete Woodstock set in superb audio quality.

Abraxas

Santana’s 2nd Studio Album, released in 1970, Abraxas features a mixture of Latin influences with familiar rock themes such as overdriven electric guitar, organ and heavy drums. The album also demonstrates Santana's stylistic versatility, including tracks such as "Samba Pa Ti" (a classic slow-burning piece) and "Incident at Neshabur", both being instrumentals. The latter has several rhythm and time signature changes consistent with its jazz feel. Latin percussion — congas, bongos and timbales, as well as a conventional rock drum setup, make this Santana's first foray into true Latin rhythm. In 2003, the album was ranked number 205 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

The Greek word Abraxas, (ΑΒΡΑΞΑΣ) was a word of mystic meaning in the system of the Gnostic Basilides, being there applied to the “Great Archon” (Gk., megas archōn), the princeps of the 365 spheres (Gk., ouranoi). In Gnostic cosmology, the 7 letters spelling its name represent each of the 7 classic planets—Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn… It was engraved on certain antique gemstones, called on that account Abraxas stones, which were used as amulets or charms. The word may be related to Abracadabra, although other explanations exist.
