Da un romanzo del prolifico MacLean, John Sturges dirige una storia incalzante coadiuvato dalla musica di Jerry Goldsmith e da buoni protagonisti. Il tema fa leva sulle nuove paure che negli anni '60 si diffondono nell'opinione pubblica riguardo i possibili usi militari (e i conseguenti danni per la popolazione e l'ambiente) delle sperimentazioni biologiche: un argomento svolto qui essenzialmente secondo i tempi del thriller, destinato ad acquistare in seguito forza ben più drammatica.

Dalla segretissima base scientifica Stazione 3 vengono sottratte alcune fiale contenenti il pericolosissimo virus denominato "Satan". L'autore del furto, dopo aver dimostrato ai danni di una cittadina gli effetti devastanti dell'arma ora in suo possesso, ricatta il governo degli Stati Uniti chiedendo la messa al bando di ogni ricerca finalizzata alla guerra batteriologica. Se le autorità non accetteranno il patto, Los Angeles sarà distrutta..........
