Sen. Barack Obama was scheduled to appear in this season opener; however, he cancelled at the last minute due to Hurricane Ike. This broadcast was dedicated in the memory of legendary TV producer/agent Bernie Brillstein, who passed away a month before this aired. Brillstein played an invaluable part in helping put SNL on the air in the mid-1970s. This is the second consecutive year and third time overall (Michael Jordan/Public Enemy from September 1991) that a season premiere has featured an athlete as host and a rapper as musical guest.
