Ahmed Adnan Saygun actually studied informally with Bartok, when the latter visited Turkey on one of his ethnographic expeditions. Saygun learned a lot, and they remained good friends until Bartok's death. Saygun's music also seems rooted in Turkish folk rhythms, but rarely (as in the scherzo, here) does it actually rise to the surface. Instead, he's content to provide an intensely musical experience within a modern expressive framework. It's not atonal music, but he doesn't pull any punches, either. This is a gritty string quartet, the first of three he completed. I've another recording of it, but this is easily the better of the two.
