I'm not always that impressed with my recordings but I was quite blown away with the guitar at the start of Playground Twist on this.
Crank it up and enjoy. One of the better recordings I did of the Banshees. Recorded from back stage.

I left all flac files as obtained. I altered the txt file as the rtf file wouldn't work for DIME. Corrected a couple of misspellings as well as noted that 'Nicotine Stain' was somehow noted as following 'Helter Skelter' in the setlist. That is not the case. 'Drop Dead - Celebration' follows 'Helter Skelter'. I've added flac ffps, and shntool file and an MD5 checksum which is required around here anyways.

[Note: In addition deucecoupe revised the folder and text file with the correct show/file date, but left alone the track-titles still showing the old 7Mar80 date.]

- Drummer Budgie, aka Peter Edward Clarke, formerly of The Slits, was pressed into service by SATB in the fall of 1979, for the Join Hands Tour. He became a permanent member as the band entered the studios to record the single "Happy House" with guitarist John McGeoch, formerly of Magazine. "Happy House" dropped March 7, 1980, with the B-side "Drop Dead/Celebration," as the first single from the band's third album Kaleidoscope, which was released August 1st.

Gill Smith, Record Mirror, 05/04/80 -- "Maybe there is such a thing as a phoenix after all - and for a band that's had more than its share of bonfires, this particular rising was a blitzkrieg.

From the word go, it was no holds barred as they launched into 'Playground Twist', fair near cracking the walls in the process. It was clear from the start that this was a much happier ensemble than was witnessed last time around. A maroon-suited Siouxsie sprang up and down looking as if she was actually enjoying herself. Gone is the distant, total iciness which in the past resulted in audience alienation. Indeed she was actually affable to the hoard of white hands crawling up the sides of the monitors, smiling and crouching down as near to the edge as she dared whilst the Banshees throbbed like a well-tuned engine.

They positively worked their asses off - Severin looked thoughtful. The balconies were overflowing with heaving bodies as they went into 'Staircase'. John McGeoch's guitar work is not quite so jangling as his predecessors, complimenting rather than dominating. Halfway into the set and the dance floor resembled a volcanic eruption. 'Switch' was followed by 'Happy House' - this is what the packed Music Machine had been waiting for. Then a new number which sounded almost like Led Zeppelin's 'Kashmir'! "You wont hear that again," she quipped. By now the whole band were leaping around like things possessed - and was this girl in fine voice! - The whole place was reverberating to the strains of 'Hong Kong Garden'.

The end came with a shattering 'Helter Skelter'. Siouxsie coiled up behind the monitors, rose up like Medusa, arms whirling, the band bleaching the front row white. They returned, after exiting so suddenly that it took the audience a while to register it was over, to deliver 'Drop Dead/Celebration' with enough vitriol to burn the lining off an asbestos suit. 'Complacency' was a near miss and it's a relief to see them at last starting to fulfill their early promise. Run for cover 'cos the Banshees are coming to get you!"

"Can you hear us all right?" Siouxsie asks after a heralding play of "Playground Twist" has blasted a warning siren out across the dance warzone.

"There's not much power up here." Oh, she is hilarious! ...Likely the stage monitors were low, but still she kills me.

For those of you who may have missed it before [I snatched this blistering bliss up myself, 9/11/09]...

From what phoenix-rose petals I can gather today from the thorny dark past, this appears to be John McGeoch's earliest booted show with the Shees, period.

So TYSVD(AMN)M Duncan, for the master recording, for so severely and dearly dunking us in such special hot sauce.

Location, location, sensation. This sounds almost like a SBD, instead it's an AUD with extra musical snap. The sound has a rough, dirty, loud edge. When all is calm all is just about as clear as ringing a belle. Throughout the instruments shine with a bright blaze. However, the vocals are often distant in the loud dissonance. Hey, some of that is just down to the discordant music not the fine recording. But with Siouxsie on the loose there is no wall that her wailing cannot climb. If you don't let the sound's relentless intensity right off throw you off. Not recommended for when you have a headache, but when you want to clear your heart from dejection, line-up -- the show's balling squall will have you in its thrilling thrall. A little will go a long way to cure what kills you. And your next-door neighbor, too.

The bass rumbles off the monitors and bounces off the floor boards. The drums explode and shatter, while the guitar slashes and cuts. Budgie and John have arrived at last! The best-ever SATB is here. The new, now queen of heaven as well as hell, Caesar Siouxsie raises her Helter Skelter to christen the heavenly occasion. She roars down from her punk-goth-pop, royal mountain castle, her voice snaking and shaking through this unhinged din of unbound sound.

"We've come to scream in the happy house/ We're in a dream in the happy house."

Not for the faint of heart, this is shocking, get-up-off-the-slab fab!

"! Clear !"

"Watch the muscles twitch for a brand new switch...

"Celebration!"
