This is my compilation of Small Faces songs, upmixed to lossless 5.1 DTS-MA surround sound using the Spec method and tools available on Surroundbyus.com. (I also utilized several other audio editing programs.) This upmix can only be played on PCs and Blu-ray home theater/audio systems capable of decoding and playing DTS-MA files. You can burn it to standard DVDs using the ISO files. I recommend ImgBurn for best results. This is a 2 DVD set, with an ISO and MDS file for each disc.

This was sourced, for the most part, using the 2012 Small Faces catalog remasters. There are also some rarities and alternate takes/mixes that come from various sources. The compilation is generally (though not absolutely) sequenced in chronological order. Lots of rare pictures are also included to accompany each track.

As with all my upmixes, this is best enjoyed on a system with front and rear speakers of equal quality. These tracks were recorded when stereo was still in its infancy and there were no accepted rules for instrument and vocal placement. For example, vocals and drums are not always in the front center of the mix. Also, the later tracks were recorded during Rock’s psychedelic heyday and the Small Faces experimented in the studio with instrument and vocal panning, volume and tone manipulation, phase shifting and other studio tricks that were new innovations in the late 60’s. For the most part, I have not attempted to “fix” any of these charming oddities in order to stay true to the spirit of the original mixes.

Steve Marriot, Ronnie Lane, Ian McLagan (who replaced Jimmy Winston early in the group’s career) and Kenny Jones – The Small Faces – were one of the most popular groups in England during the British Invasion. Their popularity in the US suffered due to their management not wanting them to tour much outside of Europe in order to keep control of the band. In England, they were huge, as popular as The Who, The Kinks, The Stones, The Yardbirds and other big names of the day. If all you know of the Small Faces is “Itchycoo Park”, you are in for a real treat.
