Sold for Marriage 1916 UNTOUCHED NTSC DVD5

Sold For Marriage is not a masterpiece of the silent cinema, but clearly a quality production, starring the always lovely Lillian Gish, and directed by Christy Cabanne, who was amongst the early group of industry professionals, and went on to have a long career in Hollywood. The production design is carried out with conviction, and especially the half of the film that takes place in Marfa's Russian hometown comes across as quite authentic. As far as the story goes, this is clearly in the tradition of taking a page out of the newspaper -- at one point in the film, we are even informed through a newspaper headline that arranged marriages amongst Russian immigrants are being illegalized.



The film came to me through a trade, but I am fairly certain that my DVD-R was copied from the release by Grapevine. The print used for the transfer is a 16 mm print in fairly good condition, and there is probably no reason to believe that this particular film will ever see a better home video release.
