Solyaris (Solaris) (Andrei Tarkovsky, 1972) Plot summary:



The Solaris mission has established a space station in orbit around a planet-like object called "Solaris". However, the scientific mission on the space station has fallen into a crisis. Psychologist Kris Kelvin (Donatas Banionis) is sent to the station to evaluate and explore the situation, but soon experiences the same kind of hallucinations that have befallen the other crew members. The film concentrates on the thoughts and the conscience of its characters. Kris has landed in an alternate reality, where nothing makes any sense to him any longer. For example, who is the mysterious Hari (Natalya Bondarchuk), and what happened to his friend Dr. Gibarian (Sos Sargsyan)? Solaris and its complex and slow storytelling has sometimes been contrasted with Western science fiction films, which rely instead on special effects and an imagined version of the future. The two other scientists in the deserted space-station - Dr. Snaut (Jüri Järvet), and Dr. Sartorius (Anatoli Solonitsyn) - tell Kris of strange occurrences in the station, and the Ocean's eerie ability to materialize their thoughts, their fears, and their (strongest and most painful) memories. After being in the station for a while, Kris too soon finds himself losing grip...

Information:



The movie was based on the novel of the same name by Polish science fiction writer Stanislaw Lem, and released in 1972.

Another film adaption of the novel, "Solaris," was released in 2002 (starring George Clooney) and directed by Steven Soderbergh.
