Song of Solomon (1977), by famed African American author Toni Morrison, won the National Books Critics Award, was chosen for Oprah Winfrey's popular book club, and was cited by the Swedish Academy in awarding Morrison the 1993 Nobel Prize in literature. In 1998, the Radcliffe Publishing Course named it the 25th best English-language novel of the 20th century.
Song of Solomon follows the life of Macon Macon "Milkman" Dead III, an African-American male living in Michigan, from birth to adulthood and between the years 1930 to the early 1960's, but with reference to the antebellum period of the 1800's.. Macon is called "Milkman" partly for being breast fed longer than usual and partly because he is considered a "Momma's boy". His mother, Ruth, is the daughter of the town's only black doctor, and she idolizes her father; her husband, treated by her as inadequate, is violent towards her as he suspects some kind of incestuous relationship between Ruth and her father. Ruth, while she is also the mother of two daughters, indulges Macon/Milkman as being more worthy of love and attention as he is by blood related to her father. The confusing and often volatile love/hate relationship, along with the conflicting viewpoints and behaviour of Milkman's parents suggest to Milkman that real truth is difficult to discern, and this theme--between identity built upon perhaps idealized or fantasized family history/storytelling, and what might have really happened--runs throughout the novel and is central to the Milkman's understanding of the world, his own behaviour, and his relationships with immediate family and the wider social circle of the community. This conflict within Milkman is perhaps best expressed by his relationship with his "best friend", Guitar, and their close but jealous and violent relationship that often both physically and mentally harms them both.
The book is divided into two parts, which also becomes a method of narration, marking the protagonist’s moral progress. Being egoistic and indifferent to his community and roots, materialistic in the first part of the book, he becomes social and altruistic in the second half. Not only does Song of Solomon follow the moral development of its main character, Morrison uses the theme of memory to illustrate the poorly recorded experiences and lives of African Americans from the days of slavery to the modern era. Through greed, Milkman learns that an ancestry may have hidden a cache of gold many years, ago, but his journey takes him to his family history and origins, from the un-named Michigan city in which he lives to Pennsylvania, where Milkman’s grandfather Solomon, born a slave, lived and was killed for the farm he acquired after the civil war, and on to Shalimar, a small Virginian town, where his ancestors first settled.
