I have had this book since starting geology at school in 1984/5 ish and it has served me well.
It covers geological processes, geochemistry, basic chemistry, crystallography, and all of the rock/mineral types grouped logically together.
The guide is arranged in three main sections :-
1. geological science covering mineralogy, sedimentary rocks, atomic structure of minerals, solid solutions, Crystals & crystallography, Properties of minerals
2. the guide - 93 pages of description and facing each page 93 pages of color illustrations covering natural state, idealized crystal structures, atomic structures and forms into which precious or semi precious minerals may be cut
3. Guide to collecting minerals, covering basic equipment and techniques, where to go in the UK, identification table and bibliography.
The overall presentation is good and the grouping of minerals and rocks logical.
The illustrations (over 1000 in color boasts the cover) are clear.
The book's index is clear and easy to use with cross references listed under each main entry where appropriate.
All in all an essential tool in the pocket of the geologist in the field.
