Soto began as a painter and out of painting developed kinetic relief constructions which gradually grew into autonomous environments. In these, the spectator-turned- articipant assumes a position so central that he is no longer divorceable from the work of art which without him remains incomplete. This process, traceable from phase to phase, took close to three decades of the artist's diligent and inventive life and gained for him an important place in post-war art.
