Description
We’re only halfway through the season and it already looks like Spartacus, along with his not-so-merry band of rebels, are approaching the end of this long journey. “Blood Brothers” starts out with the former slaves just as we left them, at each other’s throats. It’s brother against brother in Camp Spartacus as Caesar continues to fuel the fires that will lead to the inevitable.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen Spartacus and Crixus show so much animosity for each other. We’ve seen them disagree over the past couple of seasons but this episode had me missing those days when the former gladiators down right hated each other. Another fight between the two for dominance of the group would have been great to see but all we’re left with is angry glares, harsh words and empty threats. Spartacus takes Gannicus and a few troops on a field trip to cut off Crassus’ food supply. A visually pleasing but somewhat empty fight sequence occurs and Spartacus has his victory. I say empty because it’s shot as a mosaic from a distance, which is a neat idea, but there was no immediate perception of risk or danger involved. It was an easy win and that made the massacre more than a little dull. Luckily, “Blood Brothers” more than makes up for this with its final battle.
