Star Trek Remastered - 1x23 - A Taste of Armageddon [DVD-Rip]

PROD.# 023

Upload number 23/29

Assorted comments:

This episode about a war between two societies which is being fought by computers was written by Robert Hamner and Gene L. Coon (the mastermind behind some of trek best episodes). This timeless story is still relevant, and one of the reasons it was so powerful in the first place may be that it seems a perfect allegory to the soldiers in Vietnam at the time, and the body counts of those killed in action which were revealed over nightly newscasts. As those numbers grew, it seems that they, too, were walking into disintegration chambers of a sort.

"The final speech from Bill," muses Joseph Pevney, who directed this segment, "the demand for peace and not giving up human lives to a computer, was rewritten several times until we got it the way we wanted. Gene Coon rewrote the script and it was quite powerful."

Steven W. Carabatsos (Trek's script consultant at the time) and Robert Hamner are credited with writing the first draft script. The Enterprise, damaged and in need of repair materials found on Eminiar 17, was denied permission to orbit and make repairs. Kirk beamed down anyway, and learned that Eminiar had been at war with the planet Verikan III for over 1,000 years. The principles of the "war" were explained to Kirk by Mea as she was declared a casualty. Mea and Sar were to be married; Kirk attempted to convince them that life was preferable to death. Spock beamed down and, in the computer room, overheard a distress call from Kirk. Using his Vulcan strength, Spock swatted guards aside like flies to get to Kirk. He then destroyed the antimatter chamber (with a rewired tricorder-bomb) and fled with Kirk and Mea. Learning that a planetary defense mechanism was absorbing the Enterprise's power, Kirk surrendered. When the chance presented itself, Kirk risked radiation burns and destroyed the computer. At the end of the first draft, no mention was made of the Enterprise's leaving diplomats behind to help with the negotiations.

I'm uploading all 29 episodes from Season One IN PRODUCTION ORDER. Older episodes have been uploaded on thepiratebay and are still seeded!

Star Trek TOS episodes weren't necessarily broadcast in production order, so I've kept the broadcast number also in the torrent name for easy identification. Most episode guides (including the official guide at startrek.com) are using the broadcast order.

Prod.# 001 - "The Cage" - was not released yet. It is going to be released as part of the Season Three box. Therefore, my upload numbers don't correspond with the production numbers!

Next upload:

Star Trek Remastered - 1x22 - Space Seed [DVD-Rip] (= Prod.-No. 024)
