Ormai in pensione e in un viaggio-premio, il capitano Kirk finisce dentro un misterioso vortice di energia e dato per morto. Si trova, invece, nel Nexus, paradiso senza tempo in cui si realizzano i propri sogni, dal quale è richiamato 78 anni dopo dal capitano Picard, comandante dell'Enterprise della Next Generation, per combattere il malvagio Soran che vuole distruggere mezza Galassia. Morirà nella lotta. 7 film della serie (cinematografica), sarà ricordato, almeno dagli affezionati di Star Trek, come quello della morte di Kirk (W. Shatner) e del passaggio delle consegne a Patrick Stewart e agli altri nuovi interpreti. Nonostante i rimandi a Solaris di Stanislaw Lem e a Cronache marziane di Ray Bradbury, la sceneggiatura è una volta di più l'anello debole della catena. Seguito da Primo contatto.
