Steely Dan – 1980 - Gaucho (2010 Japanese Limited SHM-SACD) [FLAC@88.2khz24bit] Steely Dan Wikipedia: Steely Dan is an American jazz rock band whose music also blends elements of funk, R&B, and pop. Founded by core members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen in 1972, the band enjoyed great critical and commercial success starting from the early 1970s until breaking up in 1981. Rolling Stone has called them "the perfect musical antiheroes for the Seventies". Steely Dan reunited in 1993 and has toured steadily ever since. Recorded with a revolving cast of session musicians, Steely Dan's music is characterized by complex jazz-influenced structures and harmonies. Becker and Fagen are whimsical, often sarcastic lyricists, having written "cerebral, wry and eccentric" songs about drugs, love affairs, gambling, and crime. The pair is also known for their near-obsessive perfectionism in the recording studio: Over the year they took to record Gaucho (1980), an album of just seven songs, Becker and Fagen hired at least 42 studio musicians and 11 engineers. Steely Dan toured from 1972 to 1974 before retiring from live performances, becoming a studio-only band. After the group disbanded in 1981, Becker and Fagen were less active throughout most of the next decade, though a cult following remained devoted to the group. Since reuniting in 1993 Steely Dan has released two albums of new material, the first of which, Two Against Nature, earned a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. They have sold more than 40 million albums worldwide and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2001. In a VH1 list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, Steely Dan were listed at #82. The sessions for Gaucho represent the band's typical penchant for studio perfectionism and obsessive recording technique. To record the album, the band used at least 42 different musicians, spent over a year in the studio, and far exceeded the original monetary advance given by the record label. During the two-year span in which the album was recorded, the band was plagued by a number of creative, personal and professional problems. MCA, Warner Bros. and Steely Dan had a three-way legal battle over the rights to release the album. After it was released, jazz musician Keith Jarrett threatened the band with legal action for writing credit on the title song "Gaucho". Gaucho marked a significant stylistic change for Steely Dan, introducing a more minimal, groove and atmosphere-based format. The harmonically complex chord changes that were a distinctive mark of earlier Steely Dan songs are less prominent on Gaucho, with the record's songs tending to revolve around a single rhythm or mood. Gaucho proved to be Steely Dan's final studio album before a 20-year absence from the recording industry. AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine: Aja was cool, relaxed, and controlled; it sounded deceptively easy. Its follow-up, Gaucho, while sonically similar, is its polar opposite: a precise and studied record, where all of the seams show. Gaucho essentially replicates the smooth jazz-pop of Aja, but with none of that record’s dark, seductive romance or elegant aura. Instead, it’s meticulous and exacting; each performance has been rehearsed so many times that it no longer has any emotional resonance. Furthermore, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen’s songs are generally labored, only occasionally reaching their past heights, like on the suave “Babylon Sisters,” “Time Out of Mind,” and “Hey Nineteen.” Still, those three songs are barely enough to make the remainder of the album’s glossy, meandering fusion worthwhile. 01 – Babylon Sisters - 5:49 02 – Hey Nineteen - 5:06 03 – Glamour Profession - 7:26 04 – Gaucho - 5:30 05 – Time Out Of Mind - 4:11 06 – My Rival - 4:30 07 – Third World Man - 5:18 Personnel: Steely Dan: Donald Fagen – lead vocals, synthesizer (2, 3, 4, 5, 6), electric piano (2, 3, 4, 5, 6), organ (6) Walter Becker – bass (2, 4, 5), guitar (2), guitar solo (4) Additional Musicians: Rob Mounsey – piano (3, 4, 5), synthesizer (7), horn arrangement (1, 5) Don Grolnick – electric piano (1) and Hohner Clavinet (1) Pat Rebillot (6), Joe Sample (7) – electric piano Steve Khan – guitar (1, 3, 4, 7), lead guitar (6) Mark Knopfler (5), Larry Carlton (7) – lead guitar Hugh McCracken (2, 5), Hiram Bullock (6), Rick Derringer (6) – guitar Chuck Rainey (1, 7), Anthony Jackson (3, 6) – bass Bernard Pretty Purdie (1), Rick Marotta (2, 5), Steve Gadd (3, 6, 7), Jeff Porcaro (4) – drums Crusher Bennett (1, 4), Steve Gadd (2), Victor Feldman (2), Ralph McDonald (3, 6), Nicholas Marrero (6) – percussion George Marge, Walter Kane – clarinet (1) Tom Scott – alto saxophone and clarinet (1); tenor saxophone (1, 3, 4, 6), Lyricon (3, 6), horn arrangement (3, 4, 6) David Sanborn – alto saxophone (5) Michael Brecker (3, 5, 6), Dave Tofani (5) – tenor saxophone Ronnie Cuber – baritone saxophone (5) Randy Brecker – trumpet (1, 4, 5), flugelhorn (1, 6) Wayne Andre – trombone (6) Michael McDonald, Patti Austin, Valerie Simpson, Frank Floyd, Diva Gray, Gordon Grody, Lani Groves, Leslie Miller, Zachary Sanders, Toni Wine – backing vocals Note: This is not my rip My thanks to the original uploader ♪♬♫ ENJOY! ♪♬♫ Related Torrents
