The outré sci-fi adventure Steins;Gate grows darker and more complex as the filmmakers draw together the twisted strands of the plot. Self-proclaimed "mad scientist" Rintaro Okabe and the oddballs who make up his lab--ingenuous cosplayer Mayuri, red-haired genius Makise, super-hacker "Daru" Hashida, techno-warrior Suzuha, shy texter Moeka, transgendered Ruka, and maid café entrepreneur Faris--have actually created a time machine out of an improbable assemblage of electronic junk. But its creation means they're subject to the deadly wrath of the cutting-edge research center SERN. Are the texts from rebel time traveler John Titor true? Is Okabe the savior who can prevent the establishment of an oppressive dystopia ruled by SERN? And can Okabe fulfill that mission without imperiling the lives of his friends? Despite the problems and paradoxes inherent in any time-travel narrative, the cast and crew of Steins;Gate bring the story to a satisfying and curiously logical conclusion. Each character remains true to himself or herself, and each willingly sacrifices personal rewards for a better future they can share. Okabe may have grown a little wiser through his often wrenching experiences, but he remains as unapologetically nutty as he was when the series began. Voice actor J. Michael Tatum keeps Okabe appealing and believable, even at his emotional extremes, and the rest of the cast performs with equal aplomb. A delightful mixture of adventure, mystery, romance, and slapstick, Steins;Gate ranks among the very best recent anime series, and the theatrical feature slated for release in Japan in early 2013 is something to look forward
