Description

Season 3 (2013)

The merger between Jessica Pearson's Law Firm and Darby International is complete. Harvey, still stinging from Jessica's refusal to make him a named partner, begins plotting with Darby to take her down. Mike tries to mend his relationship with Harvey, after Jessica (via threat of revealing his secret) had forced Mike to betray Harvey and lose the case which would have stopped the merger. Mike also seeks to clarify his new relationship with Rachel, though it is apparent that all is not forgiven with respect to his dishonesty.

Major changes from the merger start appearing, with Nigel tricking Louis into taking a position higher in the firm, as quartermaster, so he can take away the associates from Louis. With the loss of the associates under his control, Jessica offers Louis a chance of his own in a mentor-mentee relationship, allowing him to pick any associate in the firm. Louis goes to Harvey to confirm he can take Mike as his own personal associate. Harvey readily endorses Louis' plan, and Louis starts wooing Mike with a case that is considered impossible to win. Working together allows Mike to see a different side of Louis, and he agrees to become his associate. But, at the last second, before Louis' celebration cake is delivered, Harvey bursts into Louis' office and forgives Mike, who then returns to his previous position as Harvey's associate, while Louis is once more without an associate under his wing. Jessica also attempts to reconcile with Harvey, but later reveals to Harvey she would take the same steps again to ensure the merger went through with Darby International.

Meanwhile, with the Hessington case, Dr. Hessington agrees to pleading guilty, thus avoiding jail time; but, also agrees to leave the US permanently and pay a $50 million fine. This settlement appears to make it a win for Harvey's old mentor and nemesis, Cameron Dennis, and a loss for Harvey. However, Jessica convinces Harvey that Darby would still consider this a win for the firm, as the deal Dennis offered is the exact deal they offered him, with the exception of Ava pleading guilty rather than no-contest. Dennis' personal war with Harvey continues, and Ava's victory short lived, when she is arrested for her involvement in the murder of dissidents while bribing the Colonel. Ava instructs Harvey and Mike to bribe the murder witnesses, in an effort to avoid jail yet again, but Harvey refuses and is fired by her. Mike then comes up with an idea of how to legally "bribe" the witnesses, by encouraging them to bring a civil case against Hessington Oil for PTSD and Emotional Damages. In the meantime, Darby, not liking the results of the settlement, sends his right-hand man, a.k.a. "fixer" Stephen Huntley, to NY to help Harvey with the case. Initially, Harvey suspects Huntley is in town to take over his own role in the NY office; but, later, he learns Darby sent Huntley to help him take over the office from Jessica.

Mike gets Harold, who owes him a favor, to represent the witnesses in the Hessington civil suit, and they settle for an undisclosed amount. Later, over a celebratory drink, Harvey confides in Mike, telling him of his plans to wrestle control of the NY office away from Jessica, leaving Mike shocked. Jessica eventually confides to Harvey her own plans to add him as a named partner in the NY office, admitting that she recognizes she is being treated by Darby in the same manner she had treated Harvey. Harvey is, needless to say, skeptical. The following day, Louis is shocked to see the name change on the firm's main wall and decides he needs a personal day. Meanwhile, Harvey and Mike learn that Cameron has not given up the fight to lock up Ava, as there is word that numerous high-ranking officials from various government agencies are being placed in hotels around the city, leading Mike and Harvey to believe Cameron has managed to bring in Colonel Moriga, who was bribed by Ava for the construction of the pipeline. It is revealed that this maneuver was a ploy to get them to sign a plea deal offered by Cameron. Cameron admits this, but later reveals he actually does have Colonel as a witness, thanks to him tracing Stephen's phone calls.

It is later revealed that the plea deal signed by Ava earlier in the season, when used in conjunction with the Colonel's testimony and proof of a phone call between the two, will be enough to convict Ava. Ava admits there was a phone call in question with the Colonel, but still denies that she gave the order for Moriga to murder six leaders opposed to the pipeline. At the same time, Harvey and Jessica find that the only reason Moriga is coming to testify is because the government he served is no longer in power; further, the new government leaders are hunting him down so he can be convicted of the murders himself and shot by a firing squad. Thus, Cameron made a deal that will give him asylum as a political refugee in return for his testimony. It is then discovered that Nick made a deal with the Colonel in which half the bribe money would be transferred into his own Swiss bank account, without Ava's knowledge. Donna and Mike discover Stephen is known as a "fixer" for his shadiness, as Donna found out he hid seven pages of the Colonel's testimony that was sent to Pearson Darby as part of discovery. She tells Mike, but warns Mike that telling Harvey will send him over the edge and make him attack Stephen. Mike looks into the information in the missing pages, and does a background check into Stephen and the Colonel that reveals they knew each other 20 years ago when in college. Stephen had done a study abroad for a semester in South Africa, where he and Moriga were teammates on the rugby team there. Mike and Donna also find that Stephen set up the bribe deal and the murders, but he never told Nick or Ava of the real use of the bribe money. Harvey, after being informed of this, finds Stephen in the men's restroom attacks him. Stephen fights back, but Harvey ultimately wins the fight after tossing Stephen into the bathroom mirror, leaving him on the floor.

Jessica and Harvey confront Darby with the fact that Stephen ordered the murders, and Darby admits he found out after the fact and did nothing, for fear it would harm Ava. They get him to fire Stephen, but what he is honestly able to testify cannot prove Stephen's guilt. When Harvey calls Stephen to the stand, he fails to convince Cameron of Stephen's guilt and reduces Ava's chances still further. Harvey appeals to Cameron's desire for justice as well as victory, having Mike bring in Clifford (an innocent man that Cameron once convicted for murder). Darby advises Jessica to put aside her anger, and she does, reconciling with Harvey and working with him on an ultimate solution to Ava's problem. Darby agrees to plead to obstruction of justice (getting five years' probation) and testify against Stephen. Cameron takes the surer conviction and drops charges against Ava, while Donna watches Stephen get arrested for murder. At the last moment, Darby discovers that with his probation he also loses his license to practice law in the US, therefore allowing Jessica to push for a dissolution of the merger. Back at the office, the now cat-less Louis lashes out against the associates, then goes to Harold's office to berate him about his testimony in the mock trial. Louis and Harold enter an escalating battle of legal action and intimidation, and Rachel confronts Louis over the depth of his resentment. He explains that his failure to train Harold reminds him of his own failure and the bullying he suffered. Rachel offers that Louis has bullied Harold in the same way. When Harold finally concedes the battle, Louis instead agrees to a compromise that will make Harold look good, swearing Rachel to secrecy about this unusual mercy.

Work begins on the dissolution of the Pearson Darby Specter firm. Louis convinces Jessica to let him handle the negotiations, on the grounds that Jessica and Harvey would be too emotionally involved. This move backfires when Darby appoints Nigel to negotiate with Louis, as Nigel (provoked by Louis' lack of affection for the cat) shuts the door on Harvey and Jessica's plan to defeat Darby. Meanwhile, Mike asks Rachel to move in with him (to the apartment he acquired for his late grandmother), but the two begin to fight over each other's irritants. Louis and Katrina have a plan to increase the firm's business with Tony Giannopoulos, which would increase their side's share of the settlement with Darby, but Giannopoulos' aide tells Louis he lacks the stature to have the proposal considered. Encouraged by Katrina, Louis shows the plan to Harvey and asks him to present it. Harvey is impressed and compliments Louis before taking him along to meet with Giannopoulos, who agrees to move his business toward the Pearson Specter side of the firm. Harvey sends Mike to ask Robert Zane to pay the Folsom Foods settlement immediately in return for a discount. Zane refuses until Mike invokes his relationship with Rachel; Zane is amused and impressed with Mike's chutzpah but Rachel is enraged when she learns of it. She tells Mike that she has been admitted to Stanford. Darby appoints Scottie as his new negotiator, with the promise of a named partnership if she wins. She pleads with Harvey to exclude the Folsom Foods settlement from the negotiations, mentioning how she helped him with the Hessington Oil case and their feelings for each other, and promising that she will not go after him. Harvey convinces Jessica to agree to this, arguing that the whole firm will suffer from having Darby as an enemy. It is then revealed that Hessington Oil has fired the firm, and Harvey is enraged, believing that Scottie manipulated him. But actually the firing was the work of Ava Hessington, who is now suing the still-undissolved Pearson Darby Specter firm, and all of the people involved with her case, for malpractice.
