The series revolves around the kogal (generally known as gyaru, or "gal") subculture in Japan. The title character, Ran Kotobuki is the self-proclaimed "world's greatest gal." As a teenager in Shibuya, she's determined to live out the gal lifestyle for the rest of her life, and she has gained a reputation as the most respected gal in all of Shibuya. However, she comes from a family of police officers—her grandparents, her parents, and her older brother are all officers, and her younger sister is set on following in their footsteps. Ran has other dreams for her future, but as frequently shown, she has acquired the family's sense of justice and spirit.
Gals! doesn't always showcase Ran's point of view. It really consists of teenagers who live the same life as regular students and kogals in Japan. There's romance, troubles, drama and insecurities, especially Miyu and Aya's (since they take their relationships much more seriously than Ran).
As a result of its reference to this lifestyle, ADV has given the series a 15+ rating, since many Americans unfamiliar with Japanese culture might see the lifestyle, especially the opening chapter involves "enjo kōsai" as nothing more than prostitution, which is illegal in Japan.

.: Trama :.

Protagonista della storia è Ran Kotobuki, sedicenne autoproclamatasi "la più grande gal del mondo". Ran è del tutto determinata a vivere la propria intera esistenza seguendo i dettami etici ed estetici delle kogal, ed anche per tale ragione ha ottenuto la reputazione della più rispettata gal di Shibuya, dedicando la sua vita al divertimento.
Tuttavia Ran proviene da una famiglia di poliziotti da generazioni, infatti anche i genitori ed il fratello maggiore Yamato sono in polizia, mentre sua sorella minore, già da bambina, sogna di intraprendere la tr{spam link removed}one di famiglia; Ran invece, come si può immaginare, ha altri obiettivi per il proprio futuro, benché abbia ereditato il senso della giustizia dalla famiglia.
La serie ruota attorno alla vita quotidiana di Ran e delle sue due amiche Miyu ed Aya; tramite questi due personaggi secondari la serie affronta temi piuttosto delicati come i rapporti familiari, i problemi della crescita, le questioni legate all'adolescenza e fenomeni sociali come l'enjo kosai.
