Plot :

In the future, widespread use of remotely-controlled androids called "surrogates" allows everyone to live in idealized forms from the safety of their homes. A surrogate's operator is protected from harm and feels no pain when their surrogate is damaged. FBI agent Tom Greer (Bruce Willis) has a strained relationship with his wife Maggie (Rosamund Pike), due to their son's death several years before. He never sees her outside of her surrogate and she criticizes his desire to interact via their real bodies.
Tom and his partner, Agent Jennifer Peters (Radha Mitchell), investigate the death of two people who were killed when their surrogates were destroyed at a club. Jarid Canter (Shane Dzicek), one of the victims, is the son of Dr. Lionel Canter (James Cromwell), the inventor of surrogates. Tom and Jennifer determine that a human named Miles Strickland (Jack Noseworthy) used a new type of weapon to overload the surrogates' systems and kill their operators. After locating Strickland, Tom attempts to bring him into custody. Strickland uses the weapon and injures Tom during the chase; Tom inadvertently crash-lands into an anti-surrogate zone known as the Dread Reservation (one of many throughout the United States). A mob of humans eventually destroy...

Trama :

In un futuro prossimo, vengono inventati dei robot (definiti surrogati) del tutto identici agli esseri umani, comandabili a distanza e capaci di trasmettere tutte le sensazioni del mondo esterno su una comoda poltrona, nella sicurezza della propria casa. Pensati inizialmente per dare una possibilità ai meno fortunati (disabili, paralizzati, mutilati ecc...) ben presto oltre il 98% dell'umanità decide di usarli, motivandone la necessità soprattutto per motivi di sicurezza (in un normale incidente automobilistico, si distruggerebbe solo il robot) anche se spesso i motivi sono in realtà estetici: un surrogato non deve andare in palestra, può essere più giovane e può essere pure del sesso desiderato. Contemporaneamente si crea anche una minoranza di persone che condanna e rifiuta l'uso dei surrogati e attraverso il loro leader, il Profeta, definiscono la vita attraverso un surrogato come un inganno.
Gli avvenimenti vengono messi in moto quando in un vicolo all'esterno di una discoteca, due ragazzi si appartano, fino all'arrivo di un motociclista sconosciuto che con una strana arma spara un raggio che fa cadere a terra i due surrogati friggendone i circuiti.
