Tales from the Darkside is a 1990 movie directed by John Harrison based on the anthology television series Tales from the Darkside. The film, shot in anthology style, depicts a kidnapped paperboy who tells three stories of horror to the suburban witch who is preparing to eat him, a la Hansel and Gretel.

Stories

Lot 249 - Written by Sherlock Holmes author, Arthur Conan Doyle, this story concerns a graduate student (Steve Buscemi) who reanimates a mummy. The mummy then proceeds to wreak bloody havoc on a trio of college students. Stars Christian Slater and Julianne Moore.

Cat From Hell - George Romero adapts another Stephen King work about a wealthy, wheelchair-bound old man (William Hickey) who hires a hitman (David Johansen) to pull off one of the strangest jobs of his career: off a black cat the old man believes is murderously evil. However, the hitman thinks it's just a simple, quick paying job...until the old man might actually be right. This story was originally to be in Romero's 1987 sequel, Creepshow 2, directed by Michael Gornick.

Lover's Vow - A despondent artist (James Remar) witnesses a gruesome murder one night by a gargoyle-like creature, who forces the man to never tell of what he saw. Years later with a new outlook on life and a fantastic relationship, can he keep such a promise?

The wrap-around story takes a cue from Hansel and Gretel as a witch (Deborah Harry) kidnaps an unsuspecting paperboy with the intention of cooking him up and devouring him at a dinner party. But the paperboy stalls her by offering those three terrifying tales.
