Description
Women have long been absent from history, with little known of what they did, thought, or contributed over the centuries. In The Ascent of Woman (BBC Two), the biographer Amanda Foreman vowed to put women back into their rightful place in several millennia of history with four hours of television. It’s a noble aim, but one that was only partly successful.
In the first episode, which examined the role of women in ancient civilisation, Foreman travelled to Catalhöyük in Turkey, a Neolithic settlement that worshipped the fertility of the Seated Woman, a mythical, child-bearing goddess. She then headed to Iraq to stand amid dramatic landscapes and introduce Sumer, an early Bronze Age city built upon a gender equality that seems laughably utopian today: women took up white-collar professions and were included in the upper echelons of politics and society General Complete name : M:PostsThe.Ascent.of.Woman.S01E01.Civilisation.WEB-OLx264-OMThe.Ascent.of.Woman.S01E01.Civilisation.WEB-OLx264-OM.mp4 Format : MPEG-4 Format profile : Base Media Codec ID : isom File size : 338 MiB Duration : 58mn 56s Overall bit rate mode : Constant Overall bit rate : 803 Kbps Movie name : Civilisation Album : The Ascent of Woman Album/Performer : BBC TV Part/Position : 1 Part/Total : 0 Track name/Position : 1 Track name/Total : 0 Grouping : Factual,History,Documentaries Performer : BBC Two Composer : BBC iPlayer Genre : Factual Recorded date : 2015-09-02T21:00:00+01:00 Tagged date : UTC 2015-09-02 21:20:50 Writing application : Lavf55.33.100 Copyright : 2015 British Broadcasting Corporation, all rights reserved Cover : Yes Comment : Dr Amanda Foreman explores how early civilisations dealt with the status of women. stik : 10 ©lyr : Civilisation has given humanity extraordinary advances - codes of law and commerce, science and art. But what does it look like from the point of view of women? Travelling from the nomadic worlds of the Eurasian steppes to the early civilisations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, ancient Greece and Rome, Dr Amanda Foreman explores how early civilisations dealt with the roles and status of women and, in so doing, she asks some profound questions about the legacy they've left behind. / / In Anatolia, she visits Catalhöyük, one of the world's earliest settlements, which archaeologists believe held remarkably different notions of gender. From Mesopotamia, she explores the world's first law codes written to regulate women's status and behaviour, including the world's first known veiling law dating from 1350 BC, two millennia before the advent of Islam. / / Across Europe and the Near East, she uncovers a group of extraordinary women who created their own routes to power in male-dominated worlds. These include Enheduanna, the world's first recorded author, the Ukok Ice Maiden, one of the great archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, and Hatshepsut, one of ancient Egypt's most successful but most maligned ruling queens. Crucially, she also explores the darker legacy of gender inequality in ancient Greece, whose influential ideas on the inferiority of women have cast a long shadow over women's lives across the globe to this day. Amanda's approach aims to profoundly alter the accepted view of civilization once and for all. / / EPISODE / http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0693y0j / / SERIES / http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0693dsh desc : Dr Amanda Foreman explores how early civilisations dealt with the status of women. tvsh : The Ascent of Woman tven : s01e01 tvsn : 1 tves : 1 tvnn : BBC Two Video ID : 1 Format : AVC Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec Format profile : Main@L3.0 Format settings, CABAC : Yes Format settings, ReFrames : 2 frames Codec ID : avc1 Codec ID/Info : Advanced Video Coding Duration : 58mn 56s Bit rate mode : Constant Bit rate : 704 Kbps Width : 640 pixels Height : 360 pixels Display aspect ratio : 16:9 Frame rate mode : Constant Frame rate : 25.000 fps Color space : YUV Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0 Bit depth : 8 bits Scan type : Progressive Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.122 Stream size : 297 MiB (88%) Audio ID : 2 Format : AAC Format/Info : Advanced Audio Codec Format profile : LC Codec ID : 40 Duration : 58mn 56s Bit rate mode : Constant Bit rate : 93.5 Kbps Channel(s) : 2 channels Channel positions : Front: L R Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz Compression mode : Lossy Stream size : 39.4 MiB (12%) Related Torrents
