She began writing 'to fill the long spaces after the children had gone to bed' and for many years combined her writing career with working as a teacher. The common theme through all of her novels is the nature of relationships, particularly within families. Joanna's family is hugely important to her. She is the eldest of three, the mother of two daughters, stepmother of two stepsons, and is immensely enjoying being a grandmother. Val McDermid Val McDermid is the author of twenty-five bestselling novels, which have been translated into thirty languages, and have sold over ten million copies. She has won many awards internationally, including the CWA Gold Dagger for best crime novel of the year. She was inducted into the ITV3 Crime Thriller Awards Hall of Fame in 2009 and was the recipient of the CWA Diamond Dagger in 2010, awarded for sustained excellence and significant contribution to crime fiction. She has a son and a dog, and lives in the north of England. Alexander McCall Smith Like Mr Woodhouse, Alexander McCall Smith is the father of two daughters. Unlike Mr Woodhouse, he achieved global recognition in 1999 for his award-winning series The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency, and he now devotes his time to the writing of fiction, including the 44 Scotland Street and the Isabel Dalhousie series.
