Shamrock badges are visible on some of the men’s coats and hats. Artist Edwin Forbes made this drawing of the combat at Brandy Station where J.E.B. Stuart’s cavalry had been surprised, and Stuart’s headquarters nearly overrun by Union cavalry led by Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasanton. Left to right: Gen. Robert Rodes, Brig. Gen. Francis C. Barlow, Brig. Gen. John B. Gordon, and Brig. Gen. George S. Greene. In this engraving by combat artist Alfred Waud, General Reynolds, accompanied by staff members, is shot from his saddle at McPherson’s Woods.
