In the North Atlantic during World War II, three British cruisers were ordered out to hunt
the German ships that were attacking Allied shipping lanes.
The small cruisers, all commanded by Commodore Harwood (Anthony Quayle) were the Ajax under
Captain Woodhouse (Ian Hunter), the Exeter under Captain Bell (John Gregson)
and the Achilles under Captain Parry (Jack Gwillim).
They found the Graf Spee, one of the German marauders, commanded by Captain Hans Langsdorff
(Peter Finch) and immediately attacked.
The Graf Spee was carrying much heavier armaments than the British cruisers, but the British ships
were able to do significant damage to the Graf Spee by using a better approach and superior methods.
Consequently, they forced the German captain to take the Graf Spee to a neutral port.
Captain Langsdorff now had to make a decision as to how to get his crew and ship safely out of the port,
while believing that a superior British force lay just ahead.
