After it's mother is killed by a rockslide, the young orphaned bear cub

latches onto an adult male grizzly.

As Kaar educates and protects Youk through his first summer, they are trailed by the evil hunters Tom and Bill.

What follows is a series of gorgeous wildlife footage, but it grafts the

thoughts and dreams of the huge Kaar and the adorable cub Youk even more.

The film is unusual in avoiding many of the conventions of Disney live-action

animal films and creating a convincing presentation of it's subject.

The cinematography is first-rate, and one marvels at the patience that it must

have taken to produce such a film, even when we know that some of the events

have been staged.

A budget exceeding twenty million euro, 109 days of filming, a crew of 149 and

over 9 million visitors in more than a thousand theaters.
