The Collards and the Vendervents are a middle-class family of toy makers who live in the respectable splendour of Albert Villa in the London suburb of Blackheath. The police are called in to investigate two deaths by poison in the family, uncovering a series of grubby secrets and an illicit affair--the 'other face' of Victorian life. All evidence points to Isabel Collard, as the passsionate and frustrated wife of the family's only male heir. She is sentenced to death.
