The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger, published in 1951, is one of the most popular novels of the twentieth century. It has never been out of print, has sold millions of copies worldwide and has been translated into more than thirty languages. A 1998 poll by the Board of the Modern Library places Catcher at Number 64 in its list of the 100 best novels in English, while its companion readers’ poll places the novel at Number 19. In 2003 the BBC’s ‘Big Read’ campaign ranked Catcher at Number 15 in a nationwide poll of favourite novels.
