Il 1942 è l’Years in cui è uscito Bambi nelle sale cinematografiche, ma anche l’Years in cui gli USA entrarono in guerra nella Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Gli Studio ottennero notevole successo con pochi e meno elaborati sforzi nella produzione di cartoni. La popolarità di Topolino, icona della personalità di Walt Disney, era stata già in parte eclissata del comico ed irascibile Papero, sebbene tutti i personaggi fossero graditi al pubblico.

La Guerra non veniva combattuta nella propria terra, ma lo spirito degli Americani doveva ancora essere risollevato nel disgraziato 1940, e la loro unità doveva comunque essere incoraggiata. L’animazione Disney fornì molto sollievo dal punto di vista del morale della nazione ed inoltre forniva messaggi positivi, esplicitamente diretti a sostenere il combattimento. Paperino era il personaggio ideale per rappresentare l’americano medio arrabbiato con il proprio nemico, in un modo che oggi non sarebbe stato possibile neanche concepire per la messa in onda.

Il volume 2 di The Chronological Donald inizia nel 1942, esattamente dal punto in cui la storia di Paperino è stata interrotta nel volume 1, pubblicato un Years e mezzo prima. Il cofanetto presenta 5 favolosi anni della carriera dell’irascibile Paperino. E’ ovvio che i cartoni non sono stati pensati e realizzati avendo una visione precisa e complessiva della realizzazione di un progetto progressivamente in crescita, come se fosse una formula, una lista di ingredienti comuni. Tuttavia è proprio così: ingredienti comuni a tutti i cartoni ne sostengono la storia e la credibilità, permettendo di scorgere un’evoluzione progressiva del carattere del personaggio. In questo cofanetto si trovano due tipologie di cartoni di Paperino. Da un lato si inquadra la romantica storia di Paperino e Paperina, che ricalca in un certo modo quella di Topolino e Minni, mentre dall’altro si ritrova Paperino provocato da qualcuno o qualcosa fino ad esplodere in uno dei suoi accessi d’ira. Ogni cartone è un esempio di rara ed elevata qualità.

La visione in successione dei vari cartoni consente di individuare ripetizioni tipiche all’interno dei cartoni stessi e questo può creare problemi alla visione continuata di molteplici episodi, creando la netta sensazione del deja-vu. Spesso la progettazione della storia, le gag molto “fisiche” e la familiarità con il personaggio, estremamente identificabile, prendono il posto dell’uso del linguaggio, cosa che grazie al cielo limita le nostre difficoltà nel seguire gli episodi in lingua inglese, specie se non la conosciamo…. ….oltretutto adeguatamente storpiata dal “quackeggiare” di Paperino! Inoltre, l’uso di ben conosciuti motivetti di introduzione ai cartoni inquadra questi cartoni in modo differente dall’intrattenimento odierno. Il valore dell’intrattenimento proposto, comunque, non viene minimamente scalfito dal processo di invecchiamento, poiché i soggetti delle storie sembrano essere senza tempo e restano molto validi anche per le attese dei tempi moderni, facendoci tra l’altro dimenticare che ci troviamo ora nell’epoca iper-tecnologica. Non ci verrà mai in mente, guardando questi cartoni, che in qualche occasione i personaggi avrebbero potuto usare il cellulare o consultare Internet….. ….rapiti come saremo dalla storia e dall’amore intrinseco per il puro divertimento che questi cartoni e personaggi sYears suscitare. Adulti e bambini risulterYears sicuramente “rapiti” da questi cartoni, specie se li guarderYears insieme cosa che, permetteteci un rilievo personale, è uno degli obiettivi di questa serie di release: fare incontrare e re-incontrare i bambini odierni ed i bambini di un tempo, ormai genitori o forse anche nonni con personaggi del nostro cuore, che non hYears tempo né età. Paperino, per la cronaca, ne ha 74 di anni (!!!???), ma ditelo sinceramente: li dimostra?

I cartoni più antichi di Paperino sono affascinanti e deliziosi. Lo stesso si può dire per molti interventi di Leonard Maltin (“L’uomo dietro ai Treasures”), anche se poi ognuno avrà sicuramente la propria opinione. Le introduzioni di Maltin illuminano ed inquadrano il contesto storico in cui si inserisce Paperino.

Il governo degli USA contattò i Disney Studio il giorno dopo l’attacco a Pearl Harbor, (8 Dicembre 1941) e questo è grosso modo il momento in cui gli short qui presentati erano in produzione. Otto cartoni tra quelli qui presentati furono prodotti per le Forze Armate e fYears parte di una produzione più ampia che costituisce il nucleo di un cofanetto a sé stante: “Walt Disney Treasures: On The Front Lines”. Questi cartoni sono inseriti a parte in una sezione denominata “From The Vault”. Essi sono di per sé divertenti come gli altri cartoni di Paperino, ma forniscono anche uno sguardo importante sulla storia e sono importanti sia per i fan di Disney sia per color che vogliono studiare la storia Americana.



1942 is most visible as the year of Bambi on Walt Disney's resume, but even as the United States waged World War II, the visionary's studio was enjoying success from less elaborate efforts in its cartoon production field. The popularity of Disney's original personality-turned-icon, Mickey Mouse, had already been eclipsed by the comically irascible Donald Duck, though both these lines and other animated endeavors were embraced by the public.

The war wasn't fought on their homeland, but Americans' spirits still needed lifting during the troubled 1940s and their unity would always welcome encouragement. Disney's animated output was able to strike a chord with audiences, whether the uplifting comedy provided much-needed relief or sent positive messages explicitly related to combat. Donald's unfailing ability to express anger rallied Americans against their enemies in a manner that would never see the light of the mainstream today, regardless of how effective such an establishment of dichotomy may be.

Walt Disney Treasures: The Chronological Donald, Volume Two picks up at 1942, where the first volume left off when it was released a year and a half prior. Five years' worth of the Duck's theatrical career are presented on two discs. Of course, the Donald cartoons weren't created with all-at-once viewing in mind, and as a result, something of a formula -- or at the very least, a common list of ingredients -- shows up in most of the shorts. There are essentially two kinds of Donald shorts on this set. The first concerns the pursuit of romance with Daisy Duck by Donald and closely mirrors the Mickey-Minnie relationships of the mice's shorts. The second and more prevalent involves something or someone provoking Donald, engaging in physical conflict, and ultimately outsmarting him. Each short stands out as entertainment of the highest quality and outstanding works of the animated short subject, a dying breed.

Successive viewing does underscore repetition among the shorts, however, and can lead to a little weariness that prescribes more intermittent viewing patterns. A reliance on plot, physical gags, and a familiarity with Donald's highly identifiable character takes the place of heavy usage of dialogue. That, along with the use of band-performed scores and occasional references to the 1940s set these cartoons apart from today's entertainment. Remarkably, though, entertainment value hasn't suffered from the aging process, as these subjects hold up for modern audiences' tastes, if not their expectations, as today's diluted attention spans will be challenged. The viewer who can stay focused for at least a few minutes at a time will be rewarded, and that should apply as much to children as it does adults. Each cartoon easily entertains and constantly amuses, occasionally even arriving at sheer hilarity.

Donald's antics are both charming and delightful. The same could be said for film critic and historian Leonard Maltin, the man behind the Treasures line, though that's an interpretation more likely to be differed upon from viewer to viewer. Maltin provides a relevant introduction at the beginning of each disc, shedding enlightenment on the historical context that not only assists in understanding the subjects' symptomatic meanings, but also justifies material that is apparently unacceptable by someone at Disney's definition of today's standards. Surprisingly, Maltin doesn't show up attached to any individual short in this go-around. That's partly because the most controversial shorts are relegated to their own section.

The U.S. government took over the Disney studios the day after Pearl Harbor was bombed (December 8, 1941) and that's just about the time that the Donald shorts included on this set were going into production. Eight shorts that fall within the temporal parameters of this set were produced for American armed forces and as such were included on a previous Treasures set titled Walt Disney on the Front Lines. Those eight are included in a "From the Vault" section here, which might seem redundant to some collectors but actually make for a more comprehensive chronological collection and will no doubt please Donald's fans. These shorts are easily enjoyed just like any other Donald short but also provide a fascinating glimpse at history that should appeal not only to the avid Disney fan but to anyone familiar with American or global history.

Leonard Maltin rinfresca la memoria degli spettatori, che aveva lasciato, con l’acquolina in bocca (!), al termine del volume 1. Già nel 1940 Paperino era la star indiscussa degli Studio Disney ed è diventato uno dei volti più popolari del periodo della Seconda Guerra Mondiale.


Leonard Maltin starts things off by refreshing the memories of viewers who left off at the end of Donald's first volume of Treasures. By the early 1940s, Donald Duck was Walt Disney's star and in many ways he'd be the pop culture face of the second World War. Leonard addresses all that and gives a preview of things to come on the second disc.

This section is accessible directly from the first disc's main menu and it contains the eight Donald war shorts on this set. Each of these would probably have previously garnered an apologetic introduction by Leonard, but by grouping them all together, the smiley film critic is able to offer only one such message so that viewers, as he puts it, "can't say I didn't warn you." Unfortunately, that message can't be skipped or fast-forwarded through. Once it's complete, the "From the Vault" sub-menu works just like the main menu does.

Il primo disco offre solo un bonus ma di qualità eccellente. Si tratta di "A Day in the Life of Donald Duck" (49:03), e rappresenta esattamente ciò che annuncia nel titolo. Paperino parte da casa e si reca agli Studio, nel suo ufficio e lo spettatore viene condotto (quasi) per mano lungo i diversi reparti degli Sudio in cui Paperino lavora o partecipa a riunioni. Successi e problemi di tutti i giorni per un Papero, “Star”, assolutamente fuori dagli schemi.

La gang Disney del “Mickey Mouse Club” è coinvolta in un episodio di “Disenyland” in cui vengono presentati diversi cartoni.

"A Day in the Life of Donald Duck" (49:03)
The first disc offers only one bonus feature, though it's a substantial one: an episode of "Disneyland," the anthology series that helped fund the theme park that is its namesake and marked Walt Disney's capitalization of the fresh TV market. This episode is titled "A Day in the Life of Donald Duck" (49:03), and it delivers exactly what is promised. From his cartoon home to his office in the Disney studios in Burbank and back again, the special shows the trials and tribulations of an animated star at the height of his game.

The "Mickey Mouse Club" gang even shows up and usher in more than one of the several Donald cartoon shorts that are presented within the episode. It's presented in its original black and white and offerings from "Disneyland" are always appreciated.
