DescriptionWilliam Hope Hodgson (1877–1918) English author, disillusioned sailor and bodybuilder. These five volumes collect all of his published work - each volume starting with one of his novels and then including other stories that fit the general theme. They include an introduction and final notes on the texts and the last volume also presents the "copyright versions" and other alternate releases (plus two counterfeits) making the set about as comprehensive as it is possible to get. The Boats of the "Glen Carrig" and Other Nautical Adventures Being the First Volume of the Collected Fiction of William Hope Hodgson, edited by Jeremy Lassen, collects all the series sea fiction of this British fantasist, much of it long unavailable. Despite some labored archaisms and obtrusive dialects, the emotional depth of the poignant Valley of Lost Children and the searing Judge Barclay's Wife exemplifies Hodgson's penetrating insight into the abuses society masks beneath its supposed values and ideals, while the eerily Swiftian Date 1965: Modern Warfare, written in 1908, foresees the horrors of the trenches. Today's readers will find it a struggle, but one worth undertaking.
