The Color Purple (1982) won Afro-American author Alice Walker the Pulitzer Prize ('83) for Fiction as well as the American National Book Award for Fiction. It was later adapted into a film and musical of the same name.
Written as a series of "letters" to God by Celie --a fourteen year old black girl in rural Georgia, the victim of child abuse and neglect -- The Color Purple tells the story of Celie and her sister Nettie, both of whom have been raped (and by whom Celie has already had two children, both taken away or abducted by Alphonso, a man she "believes" to be her father).
Taking place mostly in rural Georgia, the story focuses on the life of Celie, her sister and the small local community. Centred mainly on the life African-American women in the southern United States in the 1930s, The Color Purple addresses numerous issues including the exceedingly low position of African Americans, particularly African American women, in American social culture. The novel has been the frequent target of censors and appears on the American Library Association list of the 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 2000-2009 at number seventeen because of the sometimes explicit content, particularly in terms of violence
