English Plot;

In London, Justin Quayle (Ralph Fiennes) meets and falls in love with outspoken humanitarian Tessa (Rachel Weisz), an activist who persuades him to take her back with him to Kenya.

Justin, a shy low-rung British diplomat and horticultural hobbyist posted in Kenya, is one to avoid making a fuss until he learns that his wife was found dead on the veldt. Tessa has been murdered at a crossroads along with her Kenyan driver. Her colleague doctor Arnold Bluhm (Hubert Koundé) is initially suspected of her murder but is later found to have been murdered on the same day as Tessa. Various rumours abound that the two were having an affair; however, it is later revealed that Bluhm was in fact gay.

As the mystery surrounding his wife's death unfolds, Justin is radicalised in his determination to get to the bottom of his wife's murder. He soon runs up against a drug corporation that is using Kenya's population for fraudulent testing of a tuberculosis drug ("dypraxa") with known harmful side effects and disregards the well-being of its poor African test subjects.

In een afgelegen deel van Noord-Kenia wordt het gruwelijk verminkte lijk gevonden van de jonge Britse Tessa Quayle (Rachel Weisz). Haar reisgenoot, een lokale arts, is nergens te bekennen, en al snel wordt er gepraat over een crime passionnel. Tessa's echtgenoot Justin Quayle (Ralph Fiennes), een timide en ambitieloze diplomaat, gelooft niet dat zijn vrouw overspel pleegde en besluit alles op alles te zetten om de waarheid achter de moord op zijn vrouw te achterhalen. Zijn zoektocht mondt uit in een persoonlijke odyssee, waarbij hij zijn eigen leven voortdurend op het spel zet. Gaandeweg ontdekt Justin dat zowel hij als zijn vrouw spinnen waren in een web van verreikende internationale intriges en samenzweringen.
