From Booklist
A companion volume to The United States in the First World War [RBB F 1 96], this volume presents information on the non-U.S. aspects of the conflict. The editor assembled 94 contributors who crafted more than 600 entries that cover such subjects as major battles, terms of peace, weapons systems, military medicine, and infantry tactics. Articles include Revolution in Hungary; Isonzo, Battles of; Gallipoli Campaign; and Poison Gas. Entries treat literature that grew out of the war, such as All Quiet on the Western Front, and films and music about the war. The 350 biographies cover such people as T. E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia" ), Churchill, and Trotsky.
Each lengthy essay is signed and is followed by a bibliography that includes both English and non-English-language secondary sources. There are cross-references at the end of essays, and an index provides additional access. The index notes tables that give such statistics as artillery numbers, battle cruisers, battleships, casualties, etc. Fourteen black-and-white maps at the beginning of the volume include the Ypres Salient (1914^-18), the Somme, the Battle of Verdun, as well as various fronts.

Inevitably, there is some duplication here with The United States in the First World War, but many events that predated America's entry into the war in 1917 are covered in this companion volume. It will provide a solid foundation of information for library reference sections. Small public libraries and high-school collections might opt instead for the less-expensive World War One Source Book (Sterling, 1992).
