The Exorcist Directors Cut 1973.
Novelist William Peter Blatty based his best-seller on the last known Catholic
sanctioned exorcism in the United States. Blatty transformed the little boy in
the 1949 incident into a little girl named Regan, played by 14-year-old Linda
Blair. Suddenly prone to fits and bizarre behaviour, Regan proves quite a
handful for her actress-mother, Chris MacNeil (played by Ellen Burstyn,
although Blatty reportedly based the character on his next-door neighbour
Shirley MacLaine). When Regan gets completely out of hand, Chris calls in
young priest Father Karras (Jason Miller), who becomes convinced that the
girl is possessed by the Devil and that they must call in an exorcist: namely,
Father Merrin (Max von Sydow). His foe proves to be no run-of-the-mill demon,
and both the priest and the girl suffer numerous horrors during their
struggles. The Exorcist received a theatrical re-release in 2000, in a special
edition that added 11 minutes of footage trimmed from the film's original
release and digitally enhanced Chris Newman's Oscar-winning sound work.

Exorcist II The Heretic 1977.
Four years after her bout of demonic possession, Regan MacNeil seems at peace
as she enjoys a privileged but lonely adolescence. Her actress mother, absent
on-location, leaves her in the care of her childhood nanny, Sharon, who feels
inextricably bound to her young charge despite the terror she endured during
the girl's possession. Regan attends frequent counselling sessions with Dr.
Gene Tuskin, an unorthodox psychologist who believes Regan remembers more of
her ordeal than she admits. Meanwhile, Father Lamont, a protégé of the priest
who died exorcising Regan, is called to investigate the death of his mentor.
The Church is divided over the teachings of Father Merrin and wants to gather
documentation of his views about demonic existence. Father Lamont himself is
conflicted -- haunted by images of a possessed woman he could not save. As he
and Dr. Tuskin become convinced that the demon still exhibits a hold on Regan,
the priest sojourns to Africa in search of Kokuma, who as a boy was possessed by
the same demon and exorcised by Father Merrin. Learning the true name and ancient
origins of his supernatural foe, Lamont returns to America to stage a climactic
battle for Regan's soul.

The Exorcist III 1990.
Lt. Kinderman and Father Dyer cheer each other up on the anniversary of the death
of their mutual friend, Father Damien Karras, by going to see "It's a Wonderful
Life" at the local theatre in Georgetown, near Washington D.C. But there's no
cheering Kinderman while a particularly cruel and gruesome serial killer is at
large. His murders, which involve torture, decapitation and the desecration of
religious icons, is bad enough; but they also resemble those of the Gemini
Killer, who has been dead for fifteen years.

Exorcist The Beginning 2004.
Archeologist Lankester Merrin is asked to go to East Africa to excavate a church
that has been found completely buried in sand. Merrin is also an ordained Roman
Catholic priest who, still haunted by what he was forced to do during World War
II in his native Holland, eschews any religion or belief. He's fascinated by
what he finds and that it dates hundred of years before Christianity was
introduced to the area. Accompanied by a young priest, Father Francis, to keep
an eye on the religious elements of what they find, Merrin makes his way to the
camp. There he meets a young doctor, Sarah and soon realizes there is an air
of gloom that envelops the entire site. Workmen go mad and a young boy is mauled
by a pack of hyenas while completely ignoring his younger brother Joseph. Inside
the church itself they find signs of desecration. Merrin is forced to re-examine
his lack of faith and come face to face with the devil.

Dominion Prequel to the Exorcist 2005.
After one of his men is murdered with a kitchen knife in his back, a Nazi
officer gathers all the citizens in the small Holland town and orders ten
of them to be shot. And he demands that the town's priest, Father Merrin,
choose which ten. British East Africa, 1947. It's three years later. Father
Merrin has lost his faith, and his standing in the church is undecided. Merrin
has now developed an interest in archaeology. He is working now on his sixth
archaeological dig, and this one is by far the most fascinating. He's
supervising the uncovering of a church that dates from the fifth century in
an area where there should be no Christian church that old. A woman doctor,
a zealous young missionary, an overzealous British major and Merrin soon find
themselves caught in a battle between good and evil, as the dig supernaturally
causes a crippled adolescent, shunned by the local tribe, to become possessed
by a demon.
