In The Fantastic Magic Baby, Chang weaves a wild and woolly yarn about how the legendary Monkey King and Goddess of Mercy battle and defeat the child god Hung Hai-erh then point him down the road to righteousness. This fantastical film is sure to please everyone!! Freaking fantastic! First off, I was watching the movie thinking of all these great things to say about jingju and opera stage fighting and the story of Xi You Ji, and then BAAAAMPHF! Shaw Brothers said it all for me! This is not only a superb look into one of the stories of Xi You Ji, but also an excellent documentary on the performance of jingju! I was so surprised when the film ended and the documentary started, but I was also beside myself with joy! This is amazing!
So for the film - as explained in the second half of the movie, the moves are all jingju opera stage fighting moves and they are accented and simultaneously cued by the music. I can talk all day about that, but instead, I invite you to PM me about that - Used to be a naboa player in a jingju group and learned to follow all patterns, cues, and variations in performance styles from a very knowledgeable percussion master and that's all I did for some time, so I won't waste your time here with that rant - let it suffice to say that the fight sequences in the film are excellent displays of operatic story telling choreography and it was a sheer delight to watch the Red Boy (Hong Haizi) become enlightened. They could have finished the story because Princess Iron Fan and the Ox Demon have more interaction with Sun Kong and his fellow travellers, but I'm actually glad the stopped where they did because the second half may have been even more exciting for me!
The documentary that follows is so well filmed and clearly exhibits the interaction between musicians and performers that I felt I knew exactly what everyone was going to do next as the scenes are presented. The descriptions chosen by the director truly showed an excellent working knowledge of the art form and connected the discussion with the film prior. To me that was invaluable. it's great to learn all about jingju opera, but it's much more enthrawling to see how Shaw Brothers takes skills from this art form and places them in a cinematic context to hilight action and narrative, in the same or similar ways opera does, but with the camera and movie audience in mind. It makes one appreciate the hard work that goes into these fantastic films and how other, less directly derived from opera SB movies still draws heavily from the musical stage and brings tales to life more dramatically as a result! (I think we can all see how King Hu was influenced by some of this, too!)
They could have gone more into the religious aspects of Xi You Ji or even just the specifics of this chapter, but it wasn't needed, Of course, the original target audience would be able to tell this entire story without referencing anything, as Xi You Ji is a staple in Chinese culture, but also, the dialogue (no singing used, btw) gives away just enough to make the details known, and lets the fight sequences tell the rest of the story, as the opera would have done. Perfect in that respect! Simply perfect! Don't expect major martial arts style displays or subtilites of plot, but instead revel in the stylized dance fighting and cultural aesthetic that abounds in this one!
And as DataDyne says - possible the best SB title yet! Especially since it's not a good translation of the title at all... 紅孩兒 means The Red Boy or the Red Son. Anyway, Fantastic Magic Baby is more fun!
So DEFINITELY grab this outstanding dual film/documentary and enjoy a heavy dose of ultra interesting Chinese musical theatre culture, Shaw Borthers style!
Thank you SOOOOO much Carjacker! Cheers!
There you see that he Thought 'Magic Baby...' was a bit "immature", so that push back my interest a little.
Anyway, I didn't realise it was a request, so thank you for that! If there are more SB films like this one, I hereby request them all! Great stuff!
Thanks again Carjacker! You are the MAN! (not The man, a man perhaps, definitely the MAN, but not The man - you know what I'm sayin'...) Cheers!
HK movies only lose to Italian ones when came to Number of alternate titles.
Must be Heaven & Hell, maybe a working title at the time, or something for short...

"Na Cha and the Seven Devils" apparently is another movie. Not directed by Chang Cheh: http://hkmdb.com/db/movies/v...?id=5437&display_set=eng
Thank you for continuing to share your hard work for the kung fu head masses, Buddha is amazed.
Edit: I just visited Celestial Pictures' YouTube channel thru the trailer link provided, why did they steal my "Summer of Fu" slogan? I been saying that months before they uploaded that.
