This is the first of four planned, English translation volumes of her correspondence--nearly four hundred letters total--that reveal the abbess as reformer, advisor, intellectual, musician, even exorcist. They also provide information about twelfth-century Germany's religious schism and political unrest. This first volume contains ninety letters to popes, archbishops, and bishops.
