Preda dell'alcol per consolarsi degli scarsi successi letterari, scrittore in crisi allontana da sé il fratello e la donna che lo ama. Tenta il suicidio, ma la donna non si rassegna. Tratto da un romanzo di Charles Jackson, è il film più germanico (espressionista) del geniale B. Wilder: un classico dell'alcolismo (rappresentato come vizio solitario che sfocia, alla lettera, in uno spettacolo “solitario”), sullo sfondo di una New York allucinata. Consigliabile (o no?) a chi beve più di un litro al giorno. 4 Oscar: miglior film, regia, sceneggiatura (Charles Brackett, B. Wilder) e R. Milland. L'avrebbero meritato anche la fotografia di John F. Seitz (per l'uso della profondità di campo) e le musiche di M. Rosza.
