Theatrale muziek die eindeloos intrigeert. Warme indie-pop-nummers als kleine
toneelstukjes vol ironische teksten. En met even eenvoudige als briljante melodie-
lijntjes. The Magnetic Fields - ooit verantwoordelijk voor de luid bejubelde, driedelige
cd-liefdescyclus, 69 Lovesongs (1999) - brengt het allemaal. Binnen deze band is
New Yorker Stephin Merritt de allesbepalende muzieksmid; hij schrijft, produceert,
zingt, bespeelt en smeedt. Het laatste en tiende plaatwerk dat van zijn aambeeld komt,
heet Love at the Bottom of the Sea en is een hernieuwende kennismaking met een
blend van akoestisch en synth (Magnetic Fields bracht hiervoor drie synth-loze albums
uit) en verpakt in vijftien nummersvan nog geen drie minunten. Ofwel, een Magnetic
Fields waarmee we vertrouwd zijn - en zoals we het liefst horen.
