Their roles and "powers," however, became more suspect and condemned--in the West--as Christianity became more popular. While such beliefs were less appreciated and more suppressed with time, they were never obliterated. Consequently, a gradual merging of old magical practices with philosophy, specifically Neoplatonism, during the Middle Ages insured their continuation.
