Description
The Moral Equivalent of War is a speech delivered by philosopher and psychologist William James (1842–1910) in 1906 and published in essay form in 1910. The essay attempts to answer the questions of why we are so fascinated by militaries and militarism and what can be done to channel this otherwise positive fascination into peaceful channels. Rather than simply asking "War, what is it good for?" or stipulating that we should make love not war, James first attempts to understand and explicate the positive aspects of military organization and then to explain how the same degree of organization, order, efficiency and honor can be achieved in civil and civilized life. Unfortunately, when one searches for this text online, the first result that pops up is the website of some weirdo who runs a pseudo-intellectual society and uses this essay in a vain attempt to bestow his website with a quasi-erudite veneer. So, to make James's masterpiece available to a wider audience without subjecting it to the musings of a loon, I made it available in printer-friendly PDF, mobi, azw3, and ePub formats.
