Vint Bonner is on his way to the Jefferson Ranch for the cattle round up when Scar, his horse, begins to favour one of

his rear hoofs and he detours to Clay City. A hold up at the express office has left Sam dead and Amos seriously

wounded. Sheriff Lawson is doing nothing to persue the trail as he believes it may be his son who has perpetrated the

hold up. After meeting Amos, whose testimony would further support that it may be the sheriff's son who has committed

the murder, both Vint and the sheriff follow the trail to a cabin where the climax of the story unfolds
